Oily Skin: What is the Cause?


Oily skin can be caused by many factors: genetics, hormones, overactive glands, and dryness. Yes, dryness can cause your skin’s sebaceous glands to compensate for the shortage of moisture by overproducing oils. Too much oil can lead to clogged pores, blackheads and acnes.

Oily skin can be caused or worsened by:

  • • Puberty: during puberty, androgens cause skin’s glands to enlarge and produce more oil
  • • Stress: Cortisol (stress hormone) causes oil production
  • • Weather: high heat or low humidity can drive oil production
  • • Other hormonal imbalances

Do

1. Wash your skin no more than twice a day with gentle cleansers

2. If you have excess oil even after a wash, use gentle exfoliation (non-mechanical, enzyme-based)

3. Use lightweight gel moisturizer and products labelled as noncomedogenic, meaning non-clogging

4. It is not necessary, but if there is too much oil still, use products with Niacinamide (a type of Vitamin B), which may decrease oil production


If you have acne

Cleansers with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid help not only people with acne



Don't do

Don't pick, pop or squeeze spots. This prolongs healing time.


Avoid stripping products that will deplete your skin of natural oils. They are harsh and will lead to dehydration, which will kick your glands into overdrive for even more oil.
